Nepal became a secular federal state on 28th May 2008. Formerly known as the Kingdom of Nepal, it was ruled by the Shah dynasty kings. Interestingly, Upper Mustang still maintains a form of monarchy within its own area, earning it the nickname “The Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal.”
